  • Summer Zoo Camp, Half Day - Ages 6 & 7

      Home Sweet Home

      Whether it's a sloth in the South American rainforest, a cheetah in the African savanna, or a black bear in the North American temperate forest, animals make their homes in some wild places. Join us for the Home Sweet Home half-day Zoo Camp for children ages 6 and 7 as we explore some of the most unique habitats on Earth and the animals that call them home. Each day we explore a new part of the Zoo, get crafty, and meet some of these amazing animals up close.

      Registration fee: $150 for Members, $180 for non-members. Monday-Friday

      What do birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals have in common?  What makes them different?  Join us for a spine-tingling experience as we discover the characteristics that scientists use to classify animals with backbones in the half-day Zoo Camp class Back-To-Back.  Each day, campers will take an up-close look at Zoo animals through tours, stories, games, and craft projects.

      Registration fee: $150 for Members, $180 for non-members. Monday-Friday

      Creating Wild Spaces

      How do zoos create homes for animals? Campers will combine knowledge and ingenuity to build their own zoo, complete with interesting and informative signage. Special tours and animal encounters will give the campers a fascinating and unique view of zoo exhibitry in the half-day Creating Wild Spaces Zoo Camp class for campers ages 10 and 11. At the end of a week of exploration and innovation, Zoo Campers of all ages will be invited to discover our new model zoo.

      Registration fee: $150 for Members, $180 for non-members. Monday-Friday.

      Half-Day Session times:

      Photos for Conservation

      Explore conservation issues facing some of the world's most endangered animals while experiencing the excitement of capturing a once-in-a-lifetime photograph in this half-day Zoo Camp program for campers ages 12 and 13. Using their creativity will not only get campers closer than ever to their favorite Zoo animals, but also will allow them to actively participate in conservation efforts necessary for the survival of these species. Each camper will take home a flash drive containing his or her photographs at the end of the week.  Zoo Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital cameras (three megapixels or higher). For this program, base camp will be the Water's Edge classroom overlooking the polar bear exhibit!

      Registration fee: $150 for Members, $180 for non-members. Monday-Friday.

      These classes allow children and adults to share the wonders of wildlife together through
      unique programs that incorporate live animals, biofacts, and crafts.

      All About Penguins
      Saturday, Septemeber 20, 2014- 9:30  am – 11 am
      $32 per person ($25 with member discount)

      Join us in the Water's Edge Event Space for a special presentation with Katy Wozniak, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s penguin expert. Katy will give you the inside scoop on caring for these cool birds. After breakfast, get an up close look at the Zoo’s penguins while you watch a feeding session. This program is appropriate for ages
      6 and up (no younger participants, please). Space is limited and preregistration online is required.

  • Field Trips
    • field trip 1The Zoo offers a wide variety of options for your group's field trip. With tailored options for age groups from preschool to college level, your school, organization, or recreational group can plan an exciting experience for your Zoo outing.

      Programs for Grades 1-3
      Class Length: 45 minutes
      Class Size: Maximum 30 students, 4 adults per classroom
      Dates Available: Monday through Friday, September through June 1

      Pennsylvania Pride
      This class introduces students to the wonderful variety of wildlife that lives in Pennsylvania. The Students will focus on animals found in their own backyards and learn that conservation begins at home.

      Polar Quest
      Discover how polar bears, walruses, and sea otters survive in their frigid Arctic habitats by exploring their unique adaptations.

      Working Wild
      Find out what it is like to work at the Zoo. Through small group rotations and live animal visits, your students will explore what a variety of staff members, including zookeepers and zoo veterinarians, do everyday.

      It's a Jungle Out There
      Students are invited on a special journey into the world's tropical rainforests. The class focuses on both the rainforest as a habitat and what life is like for the animals that live in the ecosystem.

      Coral Critters
      From the tiniest of crustaceans to the ocean's top predator, a vast array of animals depend on coral reefs for essential resources. Students will investigate how coral animals build a reef and learn about some of the amazing and unique animals that call the reef home. This program takes place in the PPG Aquarium.

      African Adventures
      Discover how the circle of life applies to the creatures that live in the African savanna.

      Penguin Pals (Available September through April only)
      Penguins are fascinating animals. Come study these amazing creatures as they swim, dive, and waddle through their Zoo home. This program takes place in the PPG Aquarium.

      Windows to Conservation
      This program takes place in an interactive classroom featuring Pennsylvania's endangered species. It gives students the opportunity to increase their knowledge of local conservation issues by investigating several hands-on learning stations. (This class is 45 minutes long for groups of 50 students or less and 1 hour long for groups of more than 50 students.)

      Vertebrates
      Explore the 5 classifications of vertebrates by discussing a variety of creatures and examining the similarities and differences between the vertebrate groups.

      Exploring the Tropical Rainforest
      Learn about the rainforest ecosystem and the animals that live within the habitat. We will discuss the challenges facing rainforest conservation and offer suggestions on ways we can help.

      Animals in Jeopardy
      In a lively game of endangered species jeopardy, students will examine why animals are endangered and what Zoos are doing to help in the conservation of these incredible animals.

      Animal Observations (Available September through April 15th)
      Take the scientific method out of the textbook and put it into practice in this hands-on exploration of animal behavior. Discover why we study animal behavior and participate in a behavioral study of one of our animals. (This class is 2 hours long.)

      Marine Mammals
      Learn how this diverse group of mammals has adapted to live in the sea. Life history, behaviors, and conservation will all be discussed.
